Surgery....
Today, finally, we get down to the surgical stuff. In 'Introduction to Clinical Sciences', we finally got to learn about some suturing techniques, gloving, gowning and disinfecting out hands. It looked soo easy when the Head Surgeon and nurses carried it out. Once you attempt it though, you’d know it’s anything but. One small mistake and we have to start all over again! Talk about tedious! We got an introduction to all the various instruments a surgeon has to be familiar with and they range from scissors( >3 diff types) to hemistats to forceps and clamps. Some of the instruments' names doesn't even signify what their function is! For e.g, the Tissue Forceps are not usually used to grip tissues as they have a lousy grip. Talk about confusing. We stood the whole 3 and a half hours listening to the lecturers as apparently, it is not uncommon to have to stand for 3 hrs for a single surgery. The Head surgeon then told us a funny story hoping we'll all remember the moral of it at the end of the day. When using the manual abdominal Clamps to hold the body cavity, we should always keep moving. Cause what happens when you remain stationary for 3 hrs? That's right, you faint! Haha so apparently there's a surgeon named Eng Lee who often does the Eng Lee Shuffle while cutting the patient open hehe. So, hopefully with lots and lots of practise, we’d all be fine. For now, be careful where you sit when you arrive at my place. Beware of all cushions for remember, I’m practising = ). By the way, Surgeons look way dorkier than one would think after srubbing up! Whoever thought they could look like that of Grey's Anatomy is in for a big surprise....
